The
Semico Bellwether Award is a signed, one-of-a-kind piece
combining sculptural linkages and wind bells designed by
internationally recognized architect and artist, Paulo Soleri,
Ph.D. Semico affectionately established in 1999 the Bellwether
Award to commemorate semiconductor leaders. This honor is
bestowed on a selected company head, for notable contributions
and achievements in the semiconductor industry, under the
umbrella of grace and style.
It is awarded by Semico only once per year at the Semico Summit
during the prestigious luncheon ceremony. The Semico Summit is a
high-level executive conference held annually since 1997 in
Arizona. The recipient is also our conference kick-off keynote.

Sir Robin Saxby,
Chairman, ARM
“Sir Robin Saxby,
Chairman of ARM and Deputy President of IEE, Delivers Keynote and
Receives Bellwether Award at 9th Annual Semico Summit”
Sir Robin Saxby was
involved in founding ARM & joined the Company full-time in
February 1991 as President & Chief Executive Officer, becoming
Chairman in October 2001. Prior to ARM, he was with ES2,
Motorola Semiconductors & Henderson Security Systems Limited. He
has also served as Chairman of the Open Microprocessor
Initiative Advisory Group, which advised on collaborative R&D
activity within Europe. He holds a BEng in Electronics & is a
chartered engineer, Hon FIEE & FREng. He has received an
honorary doctorate from the University of Liverpool where he is
a Visiting Professor, has honorary doctorates from Loughborough
University & the University of Essex, & has received the Faraday
Medal of the IEE (Institute of Electrical Engineers). He was
knighted in the 2002 New Year’s Honours List. He currently
serves as Deputy President of the IEE, where he is also a
trustee. He is a non-executive director of Glotel plc.

Wilfred J. Corrigan,
Chairman & CEO, LSI Logic
Prior to founding LSI Logic,
Corrigan was president, chairman and chief executive officer of
Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation.He joined Fairchild
in August 1968 and held a series of management positions before
becoming president and CEO in July 1974. The position of
chairman was added in May 1977. Before joining Fairchild, he was
director of Transistor Operations at Motorola Inc.'s
Semiconductor Products Division in Phoenix, Arizona. Corrigan
graduated from the Imperial College of Science, London, England
in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in Chemical
Engineering. He holds honorary degrees from the University of
Calgary (Doctor of Laws) and the University of Liverpool (Doctor
of Engineering). In October 1998, Corrigan received the highest
honor in the U.S. semiconductor industry--the Robert N. Noyce
Award. The Noyce Award recognizes the lifetime achievements of
leaders in the chip industry. Corrigan was recognized as a
technology innovator, industry risk-taker, and political
entrepreneur who helped bring the semiconductor industry to
international prominence. |

Tsugio Makimoto, Ph.D.,
Corporate Advisor, Sony Corp.
Dr. Makimoto was a
Corporate Advisor of Sony Corporation in charge of semiconductor
technology until the end of May, 2005. After he retired from
Sony, he is directing his own consulting office TechnoVison. He
received the B.S degree from the University of Tokyo in 1959,
the M.S degree in 1966 from Stanford University., and the Ph.D.
degree from the University of Tokyo in 1971. From 1959 to 2000,
he worked at Hitachi Ltd. in the field of semiconductor and
assumed Senior Executive Managing Director in 1997. Then he
joined Sony as Corporate Senior Executive Vice President in 2000
and assumed the previous position of Corporate Advisor in 2001.
In the late 1980s, he discovered the cyclical nature of
semiconductor industry which alternates directions between
customization and standardization. This cycle was later named as
“Makimoto’s Wave” by the Electronics Weekly in UK. He was
nominated an IEEE FELLOW in 1997 for his contribution for
developing and manufacturing high-density MOS devices. In 2004,
he was awarded Bellwether Award by Semico Research for his
vision, leadership, and outstanding contributions to the
semiconductor industry. He gave various keynote speeches at IEEE
sponsored international conferences including two keynotes at
IEDM in 1982 and 2002, one at VLSI Symposium in 1996, and one at
CICC in 2003. He wrote two books; “Living with the Chip” in 1995
and “Digital Nomad” in 1997 jointly with David Manners. He was
Chairman of Japan Institute of Electronics Packaging from 2003
to 2005. He is currently the Board of Director of Chartered
Semiconductor Manufacturing, Chairman of PDF Solutions Japan,
and a member of Industry Advisory Board of EE/CS, UC/Berkeley. |

Wally Rhines,
Chairman & CEO, Mentor Graphics, Corp.
Prior to joining Mentor Graphics in October 1993, Walden Rhines
was executive vice president of Texas Instruments' (TI)
Semiconductor Group, sharing responsibility for TI's component,
consumer products & materials, & controls businesses. He was
directly responsible for TI's worldwide semiconductor business.
He served as chairman of the Semiconductor Technical Advisory
Committee of the Department of Commerce, as a board member of
the Computer & Business Equipment Manufacturers' Association (CBEMA),
& a board member of Sematech. He serves on the board of
directors of the Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDAC),
plus both the Oregon Independent College Foundation & Lewis &
Clark College. Rhines holds a BS degree in metallurgical
engineering from the University of Michigan, a MS & Ph.D. in
materials science & engineering from Stanford University, & a
master's of business administration from Southern Methodist
University. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctor of
Technology degree from Nottingham Trent University. |

Steve Appleton,
Chairman, CEO & President, Micron Technology, Inc.
Steve Appleton joined Micron in
1983 and has held a series of increasingly responsible
positions, including Production Manager, Director of
Manufacturing, and Vice President of Manufacturing. In 1991, Mr.
Appleton was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of
Micron Technology, Inc. In 1994, he was appointed to his current
position of Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President.
Mr. Appleton currently serves as the Chairman of the
Semiconductor Industry Association, is on the board of directors
of National Semiconductor, Inc., and is a member of the World
Semiconductor Council. He also serves on the Idaho Business
Council and is a trustee of Boise State University. He received
a bachelor of business administration degree from Boise State
University in 1982. |
